Virtual infrastructure makes it possible to implement clusters
at a lower cost with increased flexibility. Clustering software
used with physical machines today can be run inside of virtual
machines, enabling a variety of cluster configurations.
Virtual machines can be clustered with other virtual machines
or with physical machines. They can be clustered with other
virtual machines sharing the same physical server or with
virtual machines on other servers.
These capabilities enable clustering without requiring a dedicated
server for each cluster node—nodes from different clusters
can be combined on a single server to better utilise server
resources. In addition, cluster configurations can be tested
using a single server to host both cluster nodes. Virtual
infrastructure helps enable higher availability with lower
hardware requirements and fewer additional servers to manage.

VMware virtualisation supports a variety of cluster configurations.
